The Lasting Impacts of Adoption Through the Stages of Adulthood
Yesterday I participated in an online panel addressing the long term effects of adoption, and the best ways to support parents and families who are involved in adoption. Some interesting facts about adoption are:
The number of adopted children in the US in 2008 was 136,000.
65% of families have some experience with adoption either through their own family or friends
Adoptees exhibit higher rates of behavioral problems, mental health challenges, substance use and suicide
Mental health challenges for adoptees appear to continue into adulthood
Children who spend time in foster care, or are adopted from countries experiencing strife, violence or famine experience significant trauma that is part of their adoption story.
We can help with the mental health challenges that can be a part of an adoptees life. In addition, here are some resources providing help and support for adoptees and their families;
